Details for Goat Shaggers Game

Thursday, April 30th, 2009

Chivas Tifo from Oct. 11, 2008

Quick blog to keep any interested parties up to date on this weekends game vs. the Goat Shaggers….i mean Chivas USA.

We will continue this year’s pregame ritual of meeting at the Hungry Hound at 4:30pm (CHEAP BEER, I repeat, CHEEP BEER).  Remember to bring cash  since they do not take credit or debit.  The food there is awesome, it is definately worth checking out.  We will start our trek to the stadium at around 6:30pm.  If you plan on standing in our section, we highly encourage you to go to the Hound to get acquainted with the group, ask/say any questions or concerns, suggestions, etc.

And on to the game.  We are expecting roughly 200 Goat Shaggers…i mean Chivas USA…fans at this game.  All Earthquakes fans should be out in full force, shutting them down.  This is our home field, and it should stay that way.

The Goat Shaggers…I mean Chivas USA… is possibly the hottest team in the league right now.  But saying that, if we know anything about the MLS, it’s that never really matters during league play.  Will this game be tough?  Absolutely.  Can we win?  Of course.  Let’s get behind our Boys in Blue, rally them on, and now that we are behind them no matter what.

Win or Lose…

Monday, April 27th, 2009

Man, o man.  What is there to say about this team?  I have to start by saying that the 1906 Ultras will always stick behind our motto…”Win or Lose, We’ll Always Be Here For You.”  But something needs to be done.  Airblair from BigSoccer pointed out some things that hadn’t really occured to me:

We’ve played 6 games, 4 at home. Those six games have netted us:

  • one win;
  • zero goals on the road;
  • zero goals in the second half from the run of play;
  • three shut outs against, none by us;
  • and we’ve allowed 2 or more goals in four out of the six games.

This is not a forum, so I will not be going off on the rest of his post, which I have disagreements with, but the above bullets provide some insight.  During the preseason, we saw and were promised a better product on the field.  Ryan Johnson and Cam Weaver were a scoring machine up top.  A full year of Huckerby looked really bright.  A returning top defense.  Bobby Convey’s addition was exciting.  5 of our first 7 games at home…EASY POINTS.  And what did we get…well you read it above.  RJ and Cam haven’t seemed to keep that chemistry, and I really hope RJ gets over this injury he’s been having all season.  I am a lot more optimistic then some others may be about Huckerby.  To say he’s losing it is crazy.  The guy has a nagging injury and picked up a quad.  We let him rest and he will be back to old form.  Look at his assist vs. Chicago…pure class on his touch from Leitch’s long pass upfield.  The defense…wow…just wow.  I guess Jason Hernandez really was our Defender of the Year.  He are really missing him back there.  This is no knock on Kelly Gray and Nick Garcia, who are awesome guys and good players.  But there is something about the swagger we have in the back when Jason plays that makes Nick and even Denton play better (you heard me right).  Leitch has been the only brightspot of the year int he back.

What can be done?  It beats me.  We have the team.  We have the talent.   We’ve even had the performances…but we have hardly anything to show for it.  I think we just need to win another game.  Frank Yallop said it best, I think, after the Chicago tie, that we just need to grind out a 1-nil win to gain some confidence in our ability to hold a lead.

I know it may be hard, but right now is when our Boys in Blue need us, the fans, the most.  Get behind this team.  Cheer them on.  Get in the opponent’s head.  Do anything to help our boys win (minus punching some Chivas players…well that might be welcomed).  And so I leave you with…

HERES TO OUR BOYS

OUR BOYS IN BLUE

WE ALL SUPPORT YOU

TILL THE END

OH YES WE DO

HERES TO OUR BOYS

OUR BOYS IN BLUE

WIN OR LOSE

WE ALL BE HERE FOR YOU

———————————————————————————————

Big props to Troy Dayak!  Way to acknowledge that we (not just the Ultras, but San Jose fans) had a presence at this past weekend’s Seattle game.  To paraphrase what he said, “these guys are real fans for traveling to see the team.”  I believe he went on to say that the boys would enjoy that…not quite sure.  But either way, I’m sure the boys appreciated seeing some friendly Black & Blue up in section 203.

How to describe the Colisseum…

Monday, April 20th, 2009

Big Flag

Big Flag

I was looking forward to my first Galaxy game since the Quakes reintroduction into the MLS.
All 3 of last year’s Colisseum games were all on some of the worst possible days for me, making
me never able to see the “Califoria Clasico”. So my excitement tank was on full going into the
stadium. The Ultras/Casbah connection walking into the staidum was electrifying. The chants
clearly heard by anyone inside of Oakland’s tunnels. Fellow fans looking on and enjoying the
spectacle.

The game was pretty good, performance wise. Unfortunately, the Boys In Blue were unable to again
hold onto the lead. We have all read the match reports, so I won’t go into a detailed description,
but I was happy with the effort. Pablo Campos looks better and better every outing, but isnt quite
there conditionally. We really missed Hucks out there, and Shea. And we have been missing Jason
Hernandez for the season so far. Lets all hope he gets back into the line up soon.

The game was only a fraction of what occured that night however….

I cannot describe in a single word how I, along with most of the group, feel about the Colisseum’s
security. Disappointment? Frustrating? These can both be used. Excluding people out of our
standing section because they have tix in another section, depsite our sections behind open to
everyone…ridiculous. Push anyone, including small children, in their path in pursuit of a pretty
innocent person…ridiculous. To almost allow us to not receive our tickets, meaning close to 100
less people…ridiculous. Ripping our banners away from us, despite their locations being well
within the rules (look under “Accepted Items”)….ridiculous. Hey! I think I found the word to
describe security!

Now I understand that the 1906 Ultras are taboo in American sporting supporters scene, and that
many don’t understand what we do. Let me reiterate what I said during my first post. We use
visuals and our voice to show support for the Quakes. We don’t do it to offend nor hurt anyone.
To restrict that is restricting how we support our team. We have the sense to know what is right
and what is wrong. And how we were handled in Oakland on Saturday night was absolutely not the
way to keep a crowd calm.

San Jose Earthquakes, we plead you to find another stadium for “big games” or keep all the games
at Buck Shaw. If not, then get the Raiders security staff. I attended a game a couple years ago
in which tensions were felt the whole game, and small incidents occured, but the Raiders security
staff handled it all very calmly and made sure nothing escalated. Props to them.

So how was my first experience at the Oakland Colisseum? Ridiculous. And I will never go back
there again.

If this post has come out in a weird format, please inform me. Thank you.

Sorry, last attention-hogging post for a while, I swear.  I’ve started doing a nightly round-up of under-the-radar stories over at Soccer By Ives called “SBI Late Night”.  With Jon seemingly getting the swing of things, expect me to continue to post intermittently, but definitely come find me over there as well.

LA sucks.

Scum Game Tailgating Details

Thursday, April 16th, 2009

Welcome to my most distracted post. Sharks playoffs vs. Ducks + Blogging = way more time than necessary.

The greatest spectatle of all of the MLS is coming to the worst replica of the Roman Colisseum in Oakland, CA. Our beloved Boys in Blue will take on hated rivals, the Scum (I accept no other name). Kick off is at 7:30pm. Although I bash on the Colisseum, it has one upside to The Shaw….TAILGATING!

The Colisseum’s parking lot opens at 4pm, thus so does the 1906 Ultras first tailgating event of the year. The group will be located in Lot D (Northern most parking lot along 680). We will have food grilling. Please bring any cash to chip in for the cost. It is also a BYOB…damn economy.

The stadium gates open at 6pm. Not sure when the group will commence our march into the stadium, but it will definately be loud and mighty.

If you have yet to buy your tickets, or would like to stand with the group during the game to chant/sing, us and the Casbah will be located in sections 113 and 114. Let’s make all these f’ing Scum fans know where they are.

GO QUAKES, FUAEG, AND DOWN WITH THE SCUM.

Blogging: Time to Take a Stab at It

Tuesday, April 14th, 2009

Some things are just so interesting, that you have to take a stab at it.  No this doesnt refer to the kill spots on a pig/human as illustrated in the movie Gangs of New York, but rather about blogging.

I am a brand spanking new blogger, hoping to see what is so great about this trend among the internet.  First let me introduce myself:

My name is Jon and I have been a member of the 1906 Ultras, for what seems like the beginning, but has really been for less than a year.  I am born from Brazilian and Portuguese parents, so I naturally have a love for the beautiful game.  I wish I could say I have been an Earthquakes fan since 1976, or 1996 for that matter.  I was not pulled into the world of the Black & Blue (rather just Blue back then) until about 2002.  Having the Quakes back last year made me extremely excited, but to find this group was that much more.  The energy in section 101 is amazing, and that is way I am going to focus on most about on this blog…atmosphere.

Many don’t know or understand the Ultras movement.  Many only see the violence in Italy and other European countries and the occasional swear word.  They don’t see the passion and committment towards the team.

Ultras is a type of support that relies on the voices of its members and visuals (called ‘tifos’) to support their respective team.  To follow suit exactly like how Italian or Romanian Ultras groups do is practically impossible in the United States, with its younger soccer history and higher security.  However, the 1906 Ultras take the essence of the  Ultras movement, being the most hardcore fan in the stadium and chanting our lungs out for our team, and do the best that we can.

Thanks for taking the time to read my first ever blog post.  I’ll try and shorten it up and a bit more entertaining next time.  Ciao

Non-Quakes Related Monday: Why I’m Here

Monday, April 13th, 2009

(No, this is not a visual representation of BigSoccer.)

After watching one of the greatest meltdowns in the history of the internet again today, I thought it would be nice to step back and reflect a little bit.

I started by first blog on February 5th, 2003.  I was 14 years old.  That blog was hosted by a website called “Xanga” that, while sounding like Real Salt Lake’s jersey sponsor, was actually quite “cool” at the time.  It was a “personal” blog, and is actually a pretty interesting look back at the thoughts, ideas, and musings of a budding adolescent.  Let me give you an example.  Here’s my first post:

Xanga.  What a weird word. Xanga. agnaX cools cooler. I am the Brazilain Dream. I am Spanish. I am Macedonian. I am Sean. I am Rubio. Don’t you hate it when you start typing random hings when your trying to fill out space like      t             h            i            s          ?  I’m so pissed off that ***** has a boyfriend. Roar. Roarus maximus. bLog is cool than Xanga.  CHAMP MAN 4!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Until next time, very soon, the BD signin’ off.

Pop

A couple of notes:

  • I have absolutely no idea who “*****” is.  That is how the post actually reads, I didn’t change that for their sake just now.
  • Champ Man 4 was pretty underwhelming, if I remember correctly
  • I don’t know why I ended that post with “Pop”.  I didn’t do it again, so it must not have caught my fancy that much.
  • “Very soon” ended up being three minutes later, when I posted the following:

***** is so hot.  Damn that whole boyfriend thing. Cept if it was me.  But enough of my bizzatching.  Can someone tell me why it’s called Xanga?

Rubio

Like I said, nothing really out of the ordinary for what a 14 year old might be feeling at the time.

Throughout the years I’ve written online in a variety of places, some lasting longer than others, but it seems clear to me that although I’ve never really written full pieces consistently, I obviously enjoy this whole gig to some degree.

The reason for that is probably up for debate, and a case could be made that a blog is the perfect avenue for a loud-mouth kid (I’m still a kid, whether I want to be or not) who has an opinion on everything and an above-average knowledge of how the interwebs work.

Which is, of course, completely true.

I’d like to think that isn’t the only reason.. that I actually have something important/productive/funny/relevant to say about a certain subject (or variety of subjects), but who knows.  Which is the reason, to come full circle, why blogs are wonderful.

You don’t have to know why you blog.  You don’t even have to be good at it, which is what makes it so great.  Buzz Bissinger (finally getting to that) believes that “the blogosphere” is dumbing down our youth, and is more or less the end of journalistic integrity.

I tend to agree with Will Leitch when he says that the beauty of blogs is its undeniable meritocracy;  the best, not necessarily crudest, blogs, will get read.  And its even a step above Darwinism, because there is no “survival of the fittest”.  Even if no one reads your blog, that doesn’t mean it goes away.  You can happily write whatever worthless crap you’d like, and no one HAS to read it!

If you’ve even read this far, and I applaud you for that, you’ve probably begun to understand why I keep my posts short, and why I have no future in journalism.  This post was mostly meant to stir your brain about the “why” of blogs, their purpose, and if they are doing a good job of fulfilling that purpose.

I promise, later this week I’ll post a picture of Convey’s WAG or something to show you that I haven’t lost my way.  And such is the beauty of blogs – I haven’t even begun to find it yet.

Blanco + Easter + Early Match = Huevos Rancheros For Everyone!!!!

Friday, April 10th, 2009

…or chorizo and eggs, for those of you know need your daily amount of grease bright and early in the morning.

Tomorrow the Earthquakes of San Jose take on the Fires of Chicago.  1pm kickoff which means pregame goes as follows:

Who: 1906 Ultras
When: 10:30 AM
Where: Hungry Hound
With:  Beer (mimosas anyone?)

Hopefully Convey will take after Jesus and use this weekend as a resurrection of his career.  Hopefully not at left back.

See you at the match.

Lowly Ultras Blogger Given Recognition By Real Writer

(If you actually watched that more than a few seconds, I’m sorry)

Sometimes I say something that people actually 1) care about and 2) is correct.  Whether or not the second is true, it matters not.  What does matter is that Bruce, he of duNord fame, and now filling in intermittently at Bunky County took something I said to heart, and ran with it.

I don’t really feel like going more into the points he and I expressed, but safe to say, I’m not impressed with the Quakes front office in making this team a major player in the Bay Area.

Besides, when someone gives me any sort of publicity, especially with the resume of Brucio, what’s a guy to do but make sure as many people know about it as possible?

More importantly, bookmark Bunky County.

What Does This Button Do?

Monday, April 6th, 2009

So apparently this thing is called a “web log”.  Let’s see how it works:

Kidding aside, I wondered over the past however-long-its-been what it would take to get me back writing regularly.  Well, while watching local Kansas City metro area high school television, I watched some pretty putrid soccer.  Needless to say, I was taken back to the glory days of Ryan Tinsley, Wojtek Krakowiak, and other pillars that defined the 1997-2000 era.

While I’ll let CLS take the high road, that’s not really my style.  Without going through too much “analysis”, let me just say that if I don’t see this in next week’s lineup vs. Temo & Friends, I might just start huffing whatever gases inflated everyone’s favorite giant Amway jersey:

Other than that, not much more to say, except that make sure you check out information on the Seattle road trip, and don’t hold your breath until the next post.
